I made/took a choice today. The right one, of that much I'm aware.
If a woman were to travel to a country and drive there, were it not allowed, should she be punished?
If the men of the Sandwich Islands migrated to a small town in New York in the late 1800's, began eating people, should they be punished?
There are those who are likely to quote the Romans when bringing up this argument without really concerning themselves with any pertinent questions. Perhaps, should a man driving down the road who commits manslaughter on my daughter or niece be charged as harshly of his wrongdoing as a drunk driver who does the same? Does the punishment fit the crime for crime' s sake? I live in a United States where I understand -who like me- there are millions who wake up happy to be with their family, have a job, and their health. However, although I am American I was born elsewhere.
When I came here I didn't pack my culture, but it was ingrained in me. I didn't mean to bring the malice and road-prejudice I carefully practice on the road; that I learned on my day-to-day life. A night of my life witnessing workers cutting an aunt an niece out of the car. They had just purchased the "quinciañera" (sweet sixteen) cake but were now under tons of steel from an 18-Wheeler that failed to slow down properly while coming down our dangerous mountain, allowing his breaks to heat up and fail... yeah, I didn't leave that careful mindfulness behind, no sir. But see, I didn't plan it. There are parts of me that scream America. The moment when I joined the Army. Serving in our recent wars. Feeling the ever-present desire to preserve the American way of life and protect the freedoms of all at home, and those with me. There are just things that follow us.
An Irish person does not pick their accent or bloody past, an English person cannot really hide the prosperity through which under King and country kept them world rulers for a time. A North Korean cannot choose, period. These are things that we must contemplate, understand, and really natively observe before bringing the ever-so-humble "When in Rome" saying to any conversation, because I can tell you that just because Australia lies at the bottom of the underage sex trade chain of the world doesn't mean it is in anyone's right, nor that it is proper to, or that "When in Rome" anything....
Food for thought in these or trying times.
